ADHD stands for Attention Deficit and/ Hyperactivity Disorder.
The precise causes have not yet been identified but research has demonstrated that ADHD has a very strong neurobiological basis and is highly hereditary. The seriousness may depend on genetic make-up, environmental conditions and stages in one’s life.
It is not an uncommon condition but is frequently misinterpreted and mishandled. It makes a big difference if ADHD were identified and managed early so that the sufferer can optimize his or her life.
In simple terms:
- The affected individuals either cannot focus on important areas in which they are not interested or hyper focus in areas which may be of their interest but not of importance.
- Because of their high energy level and their hyper-focus in their interested areas, many such individuals have been remarkably successful in a few areas of life, sometimes even without treatment.
- On the other hand, they often still suffer impairments in other areas of life such as marriages, school, career or managing their finances.
Symptoms of ADHD usually appear in childhood and in many cases continue into adulthood.
